Though the business models vary greatly, the interior spaces are typically very similar. Small to large areas–depending on the size of business–that need to provide ambiance for people to work and clients or customers to visit. Parking requirements and the scope of restroom facilities are usually dependent upon the overall square footage of the project but less stringent stipulations than the average restaurant, for example.
In need of a retail Cannabis shop to complement their cultivation done in a different facility, the client located a lease space in a strip mall in south Anchorage. The strip mall also includes La Aroma Cafe and Bakery, among several other retail tenants. The goal was to have separate space for cannabis retail and a cannabis ‘spa’ (featuring various marijuana-infused topicals, etc.) while maintaining some common facilities such as restrooms and offices.
As research continued to be done, it became clear that the marijuana spa concept would be considered as onsite consumption of marijuana products. As such has yet to be approved under state and municipal codes, the spa concept was not something that could be done in the space at that time.
In the end, the plans needed to be redesigned to allow the retail portion to absorb the remainder of the lease space. Many different possibilities in the space were explored, both in terms of use but also in terms of aesthetics to reach the desired outcome—a welcoming, light, and clean environment.
